  • The objective of this paper is to analyze the extent of poverty in the Federal Republic of Germany and its trend from 1962/63 to 1986. For this purpose the authors use three different data sources: Social Assistance Statistics, the Incomee and Expenditure Survey 1962/63 - 1983 and four waves of the German Socio-Economic Panel (1983-1986). The results show that poverty dropped considerably from 1962/63 to 1973 and increased again from 1973 to 1986. Moreover, all three data sources show, that during the period of observation the risk of poverty changed profoundly. Specifically, poverty among the aged has decreased while poverty among children, young adults and one-parent families has become very serious. Comparisons by sex show, that the poverty discrepancy between males and females has decreased. This result is contrary to the development in other countries (e.g. USA). (xsd:string)
