One of the prominent and also basal question in VAA-Research – as a new research area – addresses the characterization of the typical VAA users in terms of their socio-demographic background and their political attitudes. Studies in various countries showed that the typical user is young, male, well-educated and very interested in politics. One major aspect however is not yet addressed: Given that the Internet is a first order medium, a VAA as an online tool can be described as a second order medium. Thus using a VAA is a form of political online communication and can be linked with research on political media use und user typologies. The aim of this paper is to link the use of the German VAA Wahl-O-Mat to media user typologies and describe for the first time the VAA users in more detail concerning their media usage in the following way: Based on an online-representative sample of the German electorate that was conducted immediately before the 2009 German Federal Election and with the method of Latent Class Analysis (LCA) we try to replicate an existing political communication typology with adjustments for the online-only population. Based on a theory-driven construction of 5 classes - which differ from each other in the dimensions of receptive, interpersonal and participative communication – we then analyze the VAA usage within these classes and cross validate our findings with additional socio-demographic and political attitudes variables. In doing so we add relevant information about which kinds of media for political information in context of elections is selected by Wahl-O-Mat users. Furthermore we can also identify more general patterns of the political communication habits of the German VAA users.
