  • "National unification and economic globalisation have posed daunting challenges to organised labour in Germany. After establishing themselves as an integral component of a discernible West German model of advanced industrial society during the formative decades, in which the 'old' Federal Republic achieved political legitimation and unprecedented material prosperity, the Confederation of German Trade Unions (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund, or DGB) and its member unions now confront a problematic future in the face of Germany's continuing East-West division and the emergence of the European Union as a regional economic and monetary system.
