?:abstract
  • "Despite the fact that welfare chauvinism is a trending topic in political science, several dimensions have not yet received adequate attention. In cross-national comparisons, the preferred way of measuring welfare chauvinism is to relate ethnic fractionalization to redistribution preferences. While this may be an adequate proxy for welfare chauvinism, I place welfare chauvinism on the dependent variable in order to find its exact determinants. The research agenda therefore is three-dimensional: (1) the relationship between attitudes towards immigrants, distribution preferences and welfare chauvinist attitudes is examined by testing their correlation under (2) different labor market conditions and (3) in the context of an 'immigration shock'. Based on the cross-national literature, attitudes towards immigrants and preferences for redistribution are expected to be a strong predictor for welfare chauvinist attitudes. I also argue that increasing labor market vulnerability and the experience of heightened refugee inflow magnify these relationships. By means of OLS regression, I estimate several models to test these propositions for three samples: Germany as a whole and its Eastern and Western sub populations. The findings inform policy makers that the relationships described above are everything but linear. Attitudes and political preferences are highly context-specific and matter most for the well off. Socio-demographic variables like gender, age, income and political ideology turn out to have a stronger impact. More importantly, the German East-West divide has proven to remain an important driver of political preferences. Welfare chauvinism has different determinants in each of the former political entities. I make use of the German General Social Survey (ALLBUS, n=3490) 2016 made available by GESIS - Leibniz-Institut für Sozialwissenschaften." (xsd:string)
