?:abstract
  • Our study examines the working conditions of those working in the field of human services, focusing on work-related stress factors, and it aims to answer the question of what differences can be observed between particular occupations, and whether there have been changes in this regard in the last decade and a half in Hungary. Previous international studies have shown that the quality of workplaces has generally improved in the countries of the European Union, including in Hungary, especially in those occupations that are most exposed to physical risks. The question is whether, in the case of "human-centred" occupations that focus on the individual as a client, which involve strong emotional and mental strain, the working conditions have been affected by this positive trend. The examination of the issue is particularly justified, since the working conditions of those working in professions dealing with people, such as education, healthcare and social care, are decisive in terms of the quality and efficiency of the education and care of students/patients/clients. For our study, we used the international database of the European Union's Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS). On the one hand, our results draw attention to the unfavourable change that, in the past decade and a half, the exposure of Hungarian healthcare and social care workers to violent behaviour at the workplace has increased compared to groups of workers in other occupational fields. On the other hand, we also showed that the proportion of those involved in overtime among instructors and pedagogues increased significantly, while overtime among social care and healthcare workers decreased.
