  • Trends and Prospects in High Participation Systems of Higher Education Francis Green Golo Henseke The modern-day graduate labour market is sometimes conceived as a straightforward race (Goldin and Katz 2008) . It is an apt metaphor, in that virtually everywhere there has been a rising supply of graduates in the labour force following the massification of higher education, and at the same time a rising demand for college-educated workers. Moreover, competition is ingrained in both markets and races. Yet this market is not a typical micro-market, which would be expected to have an equilibrating price-mechanism ensuring that the race remains close. Any equilibrating forces for graduate labour act on a timescale of, not months but, decades; and price incentives are only one of the many factors affecting supplies and demands for graduates. It is, therefore, easy for the two sides of the market to drift apart. (xsd:string)
