  • "This paper deals with the perception of the Social Market Economy amongst the population which has undergone a worrying development. The support of the system is shrinking. The main focus of this paper will be to analyse external economical factors as well as socio-demographic attributes and moral concepts of a representative sample. On the basis of an empirical correlation and regression analysis it has been researched to what extent those factors influence the opinion and which conclusions can be drawn from this. It was found that although the critique of the system by the population is growing, the application of it is criticized and not the system itself. Furthermore it can be observed that economic circumstances influence the opinion building process to a great extent. On the other hand sociodemographic factors and moral concepts do not always have an influence. Thus, party membership per se or age for example does not have an impact on the perception, whereas education or political interest does have an effect on the opinion. Therefore one measure to take should be more public and transparent discussions of the concept of the Social Market Economy, especially with and within established parties.
