?:abstract
  • This chapter seeks to analyze capitalist diversity concerning institutional conditionings and distributional outcomes, and doing so in such a way that avoids any sort of functionalist bias. Namely, we use descriptive techniques for an examination of the hypothesis of Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal performing as a relatively cohesive group with regard to both domains. Despite the evidence we present here is not supported by inferential methods but only descriptive analysis techniques, it is possible to conclude that, although certainly divergent in many distributional indicators and also regarding some other indexes capturing the institutional conditionings of income distribution, Mediterranean countries seem to show similar and even greater levels of group coherence than other typical groups of countries in CPE. Further, interestingly enough, the group coherence of Mediterranean countries seems to increase during crisis times, suggesting that their weak external position and the common external pressures they suffer may have been playing a role.
