?:abstract
  • Many religious organizations supply goods and services that substitute for the modern welfare state. We review a burgeoning literature on the popular support for these organizations. This literature review offers insights into (1) the conditions that are more favorable for the rise and success of religious parties aiming to gain power within democratic constitutions; (2) the causes of popular support for religious rebels aiming to overturn the constitutional order and substitute themselves for the state. These insights form the basis for emerging theories of the co-evolution of religiosity, religious organizations and state institutions — in particular, the development of a welfare state.
