Do local contextual factors influence unconventional political participation? As this question has been ignored by previous studies, this work explores economic, sociogeographical and cultural factors of unconventional participation (joining demonstrations and citizens’ initiatives) in German districts by employing a multilevel approach based on data of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES). Results show that the cultural context of East and West Germany has a strong influence. It shapes the effect of economic conditions on the district level as well as the effect of satisfaction with democracy on the individual level. By contrast, sociogeographical and denominational contexts on the district level do not affect participation.
