?:abstract
  • Do local contextual factors influence individual political participation in Germany? As this question has been widely ignored by previous studies, this work compares economic, geographical and cultural factors of conventional and unconventional participation in German districts. A multilevel approach based on data of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) is employed. Results show that poor economic conditions – operationalized by district unemployment rate – lower the individual probability of conventional political participation irrespective of individual factors. By contrast, economic determinants on the district level do not affect the individual probability of unconventional political participation. Moreover, the cultural East/West context exerts strong influence. Lower participation rates in East Germany point to a participatory society that is more egalitarian, more polarized, and more disenchanted with politics than its West German counterpart. (xsd:string)
