?:abstract
  • Political parties are crucial collective actors for the establishment, functioning and maintenance of modern democracy. In Europe and North America, from the 19th century onwards they have populated and organized the work of emerging representative institutions. Especially in Europe, where they were rooted in prior cleavages that largely predate the advent of democracy, they became increasingly strong, cohesive and complex organizations articulating and aggregating the interests of much larger numbers of voters when mass suffrage was granted (Lipset and Rokkan 1967). In recent decades, much of the debate over the crisis of democracy in the West has been fuelled by the sentiment that political parties’ performance in linking society with government has faltered. Nevertheless, despite their poor public image and a broader concern about the ‘decline of parties’, parties remain central linkages between voters and government institutions in established democracies, essential for both the political representation of the former and the accountability of the latter (Dalton et al. 2011).
