  • "Drawing on the social science and immigration literatures, I first outline how different aspects of an individual's life history, including their motivations for immigration, education and social environment, may affect the development of their political attitudes and behavior. To illuminate more clearly how these factors function in the case of immigrants, I draw on original ethnographic data in the form of 52 in-depth qualitative interviews with first and second generation Turks and Yugoslavs living in Berlin. Using these data, I construct a comparative analysis in which I examine the relative explanatory power of various factors on the development of immigrants' political attitudes and behavior across the two immigrant groups (Turks and Yugoslavs) and generations (first and second). Finally, I use survey data from several sources including the German Social Survey (ALLBUS) and the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) to supplement the interview based analyses with more generalizable findings based on larger samples of Turks and Yugoslavs in Germany. The results of this analysis suggest that the political attitudes and behavior of Turks and Yugoslavs have undergone significantly different paths of development. Whereas social environment and in particular the role of ethnic ghettos appear to hinder a greater interest in and knowledge about German politics among Turks, the effects of war in the Balkans on personal identity has created a renewed interest in homeland politics among Yugoslavs. Regarding their attitudes toward German government more specifically, Turks' greater experiences with discrimination have led them to adopt more negative views while the more integrated Yugoslavs display a relatively high level of satisfaction. Despite these differences, a number of individuals from both groups believe that German government initiatives are either missing or remain largely ineffective in promoting greater political integration of its immigrant population. [...] this study will make a significant contribution to our understanding of how various factors contribute to the development of immigrants' political attitudes and behavior in the German case. This model can then serve to better instruct the study of immigrants' political attitudes and behavior in other advanced democracies where the political integration of immigrant populations remains a key policy issue. By examining the reactions of immigrants toward various public policy initiatives, the dissertation also contributes to our understanding of how government actions act to either hinder or promote the political integration of immigrant populations."
