"Over the last two decades, the dramatic rise of trade with low-wage manufacturing countries has been a major source of labor market turmoil in high-wage countries. This aspect of globalization often gets linked to voters' turn to the far right, but evidence is only qualitative or anecdotal. We identify the causal effect of trade-integration with (i.e., import competition from, and export access to) Eastern Europeand China on voting for far-right parties in German local labor markets from 1987 to 2009. We find that import competition significantly increases voting for far-right parties at the local labor market level, but that export opportunities more than offset this. The voting effects appear to be almost entirely explained by changes in local labor market conditions. We supplement our "macro" results with individual level analyses based on the SOEP and ALLBUS surveys."ALLBUS-Daten aus den Jahren 1996 und 2006 werden verwendet.
