?:abstract
  • This chapter introduces the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) instrument, which is the reference source for comparative statistics on income distribution and social inclusion in the EU. Its aim is to provide the reader of this book with a conceptual and practical insight into the background of this instrument and its main characteristics. Reliable and timely statistics and indicators, computed from a pan-European harmonised data source and reflecting the multidimensional nature of poverty and social exclusion, are essential for monitoring the social protection and social inclusion process at national and EU levels. Furthermore, the social consequences of the global economic, financial and health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have given increased importance to data on income distribution, the social situation, and poverty and social exclusion across Europe (xsd:string)
