?:abstract
  • The 2017 Federal Elections in Germany, while resulting in Angela Merkel’s continued CDU/CSU control of the Bundestag, had dramatic results across the electoral spectrum that may signal an important departure point in German politics for years to come. While Merkel won a fourth term as Chancellor, she has presided over the Christian Democrats’ worst electoral performance since 1949 and for the first time since the fall of the Third Reich, a right-wing populist party, the Alternative für Deutschland (AFD), has entered the Bundestag. This has left Germany at a crossroads that may jeopardize not only the future political landscape of one of the most powerful countries in the European Union, but the European Union itself. When anti-immigrant sentiments are not included, only populism and nativism are significant predictors of an AfD vote; when these anti-immigrant sentiments are included, they once again become the strongest predictor a right-wing vote. Inclusion of these sentiments also diminishes the impact of nativism—only populism is significant in the second model. No evidence is found for economic concerns as a significant influence in the German case. (xsd:string)
