  • "How does education affect public support for political institutions? Is this relationship more consequential for the efficacy of some institutions than others? In this paper, I argue that school environment and curriculum are two mechanisms through which education affects public support for institutions. These effects are particularly consequential for courts, as they rely on public support to enforce their rulings. To test my argument, I examine public support for the German Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). Leveraging the school enrollment cutoff date in East Germany for regression discontinuity and difference-in-difference-in-differences designs, I find an additional year of exposure to a more open school environment and the West German school curriculum after the fall of the Berlin Wall caused an increase in East Germans' support for the FCC. My findings have implications for courts in new democracies, the relationship between education and political attitudes, and the scholarship on historical legacies."
