?:abstract
  • Due to the increasing priority of cultural conflicts, research on electoral politics in Western Europe now suggests a two-dimensional structure of political conflict. Accordingly, the formation of citizens political preferences is, alongside the economic left-right conflict, assumed to be structured by a cultural conflict. These insights are now gaining presence in the studies of welfare attitudes. Complementing this vein this article studies the relevance of a cultural conflict dimension for opinions towards activation policies, that through work-related conditions and economic sanctions, aim at bringing the unemployed to take up work as fast as possible. This article argues that the ideological conflict underpinning the new cultural divide, where the one side emphasizes authoritarian- and particularistic values, strengthens support of work-related conditions and economic sanctions. Supporting the idea of a two-dimensional space of conflicts, results show that variation in support for activation policies are explained by cultural conflicts. Moreover, the results also show that (1) the impact of economic conflicts on attitudes toward activation policies far exceeds that of cultural conflicts and (2) cultural conflicts demonstrate unchanging significance in explaining support of activation policies across nearly three decades (1990–2017), a pattern which to some extent is mirrored by economic conflicts.
