?:abstract
  • This paper investigates the relationship between latent entrepreneurship and the geographic variation in personality traits using the Flash Eurobarometer “Entrepreneurship” survey 2009, a representative large scale dataset of individuals from 36 countries collected in the year 2009. Starting at the individual level, we develop a measure of Individual Entrepreneurial Aptitude (IEA) to describe a group of personality traits that can be matched to the tasks of entrepreneurs, namely are autonomy, risk taking, innovativeness, proactiveness, competitiveness, general optimism, general selfefficacy, and internal locus of control. Our estimation results suggest a positive relationship between latent entrepreneurship and IEA at the micro-level. In a second strep, we employ this micro based measure to construct an aggregated indicator for National Entrepreneurial Aptitude (NEA). The results of an empirical analysis based on country-level data suggest a positive relationship between latent entrepreneurship and NEA. This result holds even after controlling for broader personality traits and other relevant influences. (xsd:string)
