  • The Norwegian housing standard is generally high. However, recent trends in housing policy are raising concern. Increased densification, particularly around traffic nodes with an emphasis on efficient land use, combined with the relaxing of requirements such as access to daylight and solar conditions when placing buildings, raise questions about whether the simplification of construction processes may be compromising residents’ wellbeing. This study examines the relationship between housing qualities and wellbeing based on the Survey on Income and Living Conditions from 2018 (EU-SILC). We use two measures of subjective wellbeing: affective wellbeing, and satisfaction with life. Housing qualities are identified through both qualities of the residence and the neighborhood. The main findings show that qualities of the residence are important for both affective wellbeing and satisfaction with life, while neighborhood qualities primarily are associated with affective wellbeing. Living in a rental property or living in a residence that is perceived as too small or too large, and particularly a lack of indoor daylight and noise problems inside the home, contribute to reduced wellbeing. Perceived issues with crime, violence and vandalism in the neighborhood are associated with lower scores on both forms of wellbeing. Additionally, affective wellbeing is negatively associated with unsafe traffic conditions and air and noise pollution in the neighborhood. The study highlights the challenges of relaxing housing conditions requirements and shows the need for more knowledge about housing qualities that can strengthen and maintain psychological resources in everyday life, such as security, the ability to retreat and experience privacy, and the opportunity to rest and recover from mental exhaustion and stress.
