Election campaigns are fought like wars and just like in war the final battle is often decided by front runners or generals who have the ability to inspire their soldiers. Election researchers, as observers of those battles will discuss at length the weight of this effect. For this very reason we take the discussion itself into consideration. By using the example of Die LINKE (German Left Party) at the German Land elections of Saarland in august 2009 we can see how much influence individual factors produce. Special attention thereby is paid to the front-runner – the general – of Die LINKE: Oskar Lafontaine. In the end the assumptions of media coverage were right indeed. Oskar Lafontaine was, paired with issue competence, the voting decisive factor for the voters of Die LINKE at the Land election.
