  • Since 1973 the European Commission has used the Eurobarometer to monitor the evolution of public opinion in the member states. These are industry-standard polls using random sampling face-to-face and telephone techniques to give statistically valid and comparable results across the continent. Beyond this quality, the Eurobarometer surveys and studies address major topics concerning European citizenship: European Union expansion, foreign affairs, economic and financial policy, the single European market, regional policy and the social situation, the information society, environmental and energy policies as well as consumer protection, etc. In its 40 years of existence the Eurobarometer has become a unique and highly regarded instrument of opinion polling to measure trends in the attitudes of citizens in its 28 member states.
