The rebirth of sociology in the People's Republic of China (PRC) that began in the late 1970s was part of the nation's new reform-and-openness policy to modernize the country.
While American assistance was instrumental at the start, Chinese sociologists have laid the foundation of the discipline in their country and upgraded their teaching and research to international standards. Today we can see positive trends in research reflected in increasing numbers of higher-quality publications, as well as projects of national impact and efforts at institution building.
As the field continues to grow, a closer dialogue between American and Chinese sociologists could significantly advance the sociological enterprise.
