?:abstract
  • This explorative and empirical study, emphasizing its empirical nature, examines the relationship between religious beliefs and value orientations in Europe, focusing on pronounced differences between atheists and devout believers. Utilizing data from the European Value Survey integrated with Manifesto project data, our analysis encompasses Western and Eastern European countries. Employing logistic regression and an extensive set of predictors, including a diverse range of values, we identify a significant religious cleavage based on value orientations. The analysis extends to categorizing countries by religious denominations - Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Muslim-majority - revealing distinct patterns in the religious cleavage. Based on our extensive sample of 27 European countries, we assert a significant value cleavage between atheists and strongly religious people. Atheists are much more permissive, advocate for gender equality, lean politically left, and believe significantly more in their control over their lives. On the other hand, religious people, as opposed to atheists, are more trusting toward political institutions, solidary, work oriented, and report higher life satisfaction in general. In summary, this study contributes to the sociological understanding of the religious cleavage, portraying it as a multifaceted phenomenon with implications for societal attitudes and political landscapes. The findings underscore the complexity of the religious cleavage, emphasizing its role in shaping individual convictions within the European context. (xsd:string)
