  • The aim of this article is to characterise the prevalence of personal sphere environmental behaviour and evaluate the influence of background variables, environmental concern and knowledge upon this behaviour, leaning upon a representative sample. The article draws upon ISSP representative survey ‘Environment’ conducted in 2010. The article employs the data from the Lithuanian sample. The research indicates that individuals tend to be more engaged in private sphere environmental behaviour (waste sorting, environmentally-friendly consumer habits, saving water and energy) than in public sphere environmental behaviour (environmental group membership, financial support of such groups, signing petitions, participating in demonstrations). The results indicate that active private sphere environmental behaviour is more common among women, older people, people with university degree and inhabitants of small towns. Public sphere environmental activities are influenced significantly by education level and place of residence. Environmental concern has a significant influence upon environmental behaviour, whereas knowledge about causes and solutions of environmental problems has a significant but weak influence.
