This chapter describes two broad considerations: the adult-focused origins of most initial research on individuals' conceptions of overall societal resources and their fairness and the fundamentally different findings that have emerged from several common methodologies. Across studies, perceptions of greater inequality are not related to views regarding the unfairness of society or other measures that might logically seem to be connected with perceived inequality. The chapter considers several explanations, including the key finding that participants significantly underestimated actual wealth inequality, as well as the possibility that Americans may be more concerned with social mobility than with wealth outcomes per se. There is a nearly universal preference for some level of inequality: not too much and not too little but within a relatively limited range—suggesting the existence of some underlying but still largely unexplored principles that mark the boundaries of what fair and unfair distributions of societal resources should look like. Several recent analyses by economists based on International Social Survey Programme data—people's conceptions of how societal resources are distributed, whether accurate or inaccurate, are connected with how they view the fairness of society and its institutions, as well as to policies addressing unfair levels of inequality.
