?:abstract
  • Despite its title, this essay is an economics paper, not a theology or religion paper. It is part of the interdisciplinary field of economic ethics, which nec-essarily connects to other areas and disciplines, such as philosophy, politics, or religious doctrines. The essay points out that, regardless of the ideologi-cal point of view and method of analysis, the various doctrines of economic thought share an immanentist vision of the world and of life, which has re-sulted in economics, when it addresses the issue of welfare, being limited to material and subjective welfare. The essay then limits itself to exposing—not debating—Joseph Ratzinger's proposal of a “rationality open to transcendence” and closes by addressing some advances and limitations in applying this pro-posal to economics.
