Whereas Western people envision environmental values as a form of altruism opposite traditional values, environmentalism conforms to both altrustic and traditional Asian values. Environmental values are everywhere taken to be in opposition to egoistic and progressive values, but approaches to environmentalism differ by countries. In some countries, like Japan, political environmentalism operates within the same nexus as energy-saving and green comsumption, but in the Netherlands, political behavior occurs in an entirely different social context as it is negatively associated with the traditional values that also predict energy-saving and green consumption.
