  • The identification of the structure of disposable household income in the EU countries in relation to the income poverty rate is the aim of this paper. The analysis uses primary microeconomic data from the EU-SILC database (N = 232,816 households). Results show the importance of social transfers, especially old-age pensions and social benefits, in household income. The segmentation of the EU Member States according to the income structure of households was performed by applying the cluster analysis method and provided information on the similarities and differences in income structure and allowed to assess the effectiveness in social policy settings. The focus of social benefit payments targeting vulnerable households seems appropriate. The segment of countries characterised by a higher share of social benefits in household income rather than the share of old-age pensions achieves lower poverty rates. Findings also suggest a positive impact of household investment income on low poverty rates. (xsd:string)
