Hungary's transition to a market economy has been accompanied by a variety of social network changes. While political involvement and wealth continue to have the strongest impacts on social capital, the inderdependence of political and social capital has taken on a new form. Wealth has become a far more significant factor, downgrading the importance of education and upgrading the role of work activity and land ownership. Weak social ties helpful for acquiring advantages in business life are more valuable and distributed with increasing inequality, while the exchange value of such ties with people outside the business sector has been decreasing. Thus, Hungary's lower strata faces a worsening scarcity of non-kin social resources.
