?:abstract
  • Political scientists are increasingly interested in the psychological roots of public opinion and political behaviour. In this chapter, we present an overview of the literature on personality and public opinion and, in particular, about attitudes towards immigration. We introduce the conceptualization and measurement of personality and discuss the theoretical arguments and empirical findings regarding the link between personality traits and political attitudes. We also empirically evaluate the relationship between personality traits and attitudes towards immigration in four Western democracies (Canada, France, Germany, and the US). The findings largely corroborate existing evidence in the literature. Specifically, openness to experience is consistently negatively linked to anti-immigration attitudes. Conscientiousness, on the other hand, is – with some exceptions – positively linked to anti-immigration attitudes, while emotional stability seems to be negatively related. Yet, the patterns differ across the four countries. This may point to the importance of contextual factors in the study of personality and politics, as the countries considered differ in terms of ethnic diversity or their immigration histories. We conclude by discussing this finding and pointing to promising avenues for future research. (xsd:string)
