  • "This article deals with the arguments that globalization leads to increasing insecurity within a society. In a first step, I will attempt a theoretical reformulation of this issue. In this context, globalization is seen as a change in social institutions. Since institutions generally lead to stable and reliable behavior, changes in institutions will trigger greater uncertainty among the actors involved, regardless of the specific nature of such changes. However, the need for a stable life course is not the same for all individuals but varies depending on the specific situation of the parties involved. Families with children are in special need of predictability and, therefore, are likely to be the group most affected by uncertainty. In a second step, I will provide empirical evidence for this hypothesis. Using ALLBUS data spanning almost two decades, we reviewed the argument with regard to Germany. Firstly, we found that the general trust in the fundamental institutions of German society declined over the period from 1984 to 1994, but not from 1994 to 2002.
