?:abstract
  • Shifting Family Values discerns signs of change in Maltese family values. A sociological analysis of the European Values Surveys (1981-1991) discovers change but also stability in Maltese attitudes towards sexuality, gender relations, marriage, resistance to divorce and the education of children in traditional family values. The western European trend towards greater individualization is experienced as a period of transition marked by the emergence of new social problems. Though the negative side of development is often countered by the people's resourcefulness, the author argues for the the development of social policy and social work for the provision of personalized and caring social services.
