I provide lower and upper bound estimates of inequality of opportunity (IOp) for 24 European countries, between 2005 and 2011. IOp measures how involuntarily inherited circumstances affect economic achievements. Most cross-country studies to date are lower bounds estimations of the true value of IOp. I find that, for 2011 lower bound IOp estimates ranges from 13.7% of total income inequality for Finland to 35.1% for Luxembourg, while upper bound estimates go from 62% for Switzerland or 73.8% for Iceland, to 94.4% of income inequality for the Denmark. By complementing the lower bound results, the upper bound application provides better estimates of the true extent of IOp in Europe.
