  • A video has been viewed thousands of times on Facebook and Twitter with a claim that it shows a school in the Indian capital Delhi converted into a madrasa . But the claim is false; the video was filmed in a school in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh -- not Delhi. Local police and the school's headmistress separately told AFP the video shows a private religious ceremony by a Muslim family. The video was shared on Facebook here on November 29. Screenshot of the misleading Facebook post taken on December 1, 2021 The video's caption states: A Government School in Vijay Nagar, Delhi converted into a Madarsa [sic] under AAP Government. It started with reading Namaz on roads and now taking over Government Schools too. What is next? A madrasa is a Muslim educational institution while namaz refers to the Muslim prayers. AAP is the acronym for the ruling Aam Admi Party in the Indian capital. The video shows police officers entering what appears to be a classroom with several children inside . The officers are seen interrogating a woman about her permissions to teach the children the Quran. They also look around the room for beef . Cows are considered sacred by Hindus which comprise the majority of India's population. In states like Uttar Pradesh, consumption of beef is illegal . The video was also shared with similar claims in English and Hindi-language posts on Facebook here , here , here and here ; and on Twitter here and here . But the claim is false. A keyword search on Facebook found an identical and higher-quality version of the video was posted on Facebook on November 19. The earlier video's Hindi-language caption states the video was filmed in front of Sanjeevani Hospital in Vijay Nagar Ghaziabad. Screenshot comparison of the video in the false posts (left) and the November 19 Facebook video (right). At the end of the video, a sign indicating the name of the school states: Primary School Mirzapur. Mirzapur is a village in the Ghaziabad district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is more than 40 kilometers away from Delhi . Screenshot showing the name of the school Local police and the headmistress of the school separately told AFP that the video shows a Muslim family having a private religious ceremony. Police officer Yogendra Malik at the Vijay Nagar police told AFP: This incident is related to Mirzapur Primary School. This is not a residential school but this family has been living in a room for years. Their kids were unwell for quite a while so the family had prayed that if the kids will get their health back, they'd hold a religious ceremony that includes Quran Khawani, which means reading out the verses of the Quran. Archana Parmar, headmistress of the school, also told AFP, T hey were just worshipping like any other family. (en)
