  • Social media users claim Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of reproductive services in the US, tweeted that donors can use their white privilege to direct money toward expanding abortion access for minority groups. This is false; the post came from a parody account -- not the nonprofit, which confirmed the message is fake. Are you Caucasian and would like to use your white privilege to do good? says text in a screengrab of what appears to be a tweet from Planned Parenthood. If you visit our website, you can add a note to your donation that specifically requests that your donations are used to help minority groups access abortion. The image spread across Facebook and Instagram , fooling some social media users who appeared to believe it came from the nonprofit health care provider. Screenshot from Instagram taken December 9, 2022 No. I will not use my 'white privilege' to lure minority families into your abortion clinics, says a November 30, 2022 Instagram post sharing the image, which received more than 2,000 likes. Another says : They want whites to pay to kill black babies. But the supposed Planned Parenthood tweet is fake -- it was posted November 29 by a parody account , internet archives show. The account, which used the handle @PP_ofAmerica and has since been suspended for violating Twitter's rules, included a fake birthday, the location Not Planned Parenthood and an altered version of the group's logo as its profile picture. The imposter account's bio said: Parody. Yeah yeah, I know. What I said was way too close to the truth. It's hard to tell the difference. Blah blah. You were bamboozled lmao. No such tweet appears on Planned Parenthood's verified Twitter account , which is listed on the organization's website . Melanie Roussell Newman , senior vice president of communications and culture at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement emailed to AFP: The messages posted from this fake social media account are not affiliated with the organization and do not reflect Planned Parenthood's values. On November 29, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving known as Giving Tuesday, the Planned Parenthood account tweeted about donations, writing: Reproductive health care is a human right. The group also shared a New York Times Magazine report about laws that require parental involvement in a minor's decision to have an abortion. Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental freedom of all people to control their own bodies, their lives, and their futures, Newman said. We're proud to serve people of every race, income, sexual orientation, gender expression, and background who come to us for high-quality care and accurate information. The donation page on Planned Parenthood's website allows donors to earmark contributions for various regional chapters of the organization, but there is no option to designate money for specific demographic groups or health services.
