  • A Facebook post is advertising learnerships at South Africa’s Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC). PLIZ COMM£NT WITH YOUR PROVINCE SO THAT WE’LL SEND YOU APPLICATION FORM, it reads. It includes a link to a page where people can supposedly apply online. The post’s poor spelling and grammar is a red flag. But there is more cause for suspicion. The link in the post does not take you to the RTMC’s official website , but to another website with a number of job listings. If you click on any of the jobs on offer, you are taken to yet another website . None of the sites have anything to do with the RTMC. This setup is similar to several other Facebook pages Africa Check has investigated for posting false job adverts. The post shows a photo of a group of people in official-looking uniform, giving it an air of credibility. Africa Check could not find the origin of the photo but a reverse image search reveals it has been used to advertise jobs on a number of other Facebook pages. ‘Consult the website’ This is certainly fake, Simon Zwane, spokesperson for the RTMC, told Africa Check. The RTMC is not currently recruiting traffic officer learners. Anyone interested in a career opportunity at the RTMC should consult the website to see available opportunities, he said. - Africa Check (en)
