  • A video has been viewed hundreds of times on social media with a false claim that it shows several Muslim men beaten by soldiers in Indian-administered Kashmir for chanting anti-India and pro-Pakistan slogans. The video has in fact circulated in local media reports about police beating protesters in Delhi in 2020, when clashes broke out over a contentious citizenship law. Muslim boys from Rajasthan went to visit Kashmir. There they started shouting anti-India slogans of 'long live Pakistan' and that they will not allow India to become a Hindu nation, reads the Hindi-language caption of a video shared on Twitter here on December 9, 2022. Indian soldiers thrashed the traitors and they went silent. The video has been viewed over 400 times. It appears to show a group of five men lying badly injured on the ground, with some of them singing the Indian national anthem. It also appears to show several other men in uniforms standing over them, shouting obscenities and hitting them with sticks. They also appear to order the group to sing the anthem, or else they will be beaten again. Screenshot of the false tweet, captured on December 20, 2022 The clip has been shared with a similar claim on Facebook here , here and here , and on Twitter here . The claim, however, is false. Video from 2020 A keyword search on Google found a similar video published here on February 29, 2020 on the verified Twitter account of TOI Plus -- a subscription service of the English-language Times of India newspaper . The tweet reads, #DelhiRiots2020: Bleeding youth allegedly forced to sing National Anthem by Delhi Police, dies. The video was taken during protests that broke out in cities across India over the Citizenship Amendment Act . The law granted citizenship to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from three countries, and the ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party argued it would protect persecuted minorities from their Muslim-majority neighbours. Opponents, however, said the legislation was anti-Muslim and part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist masterplan to move modern India away from its secular foundations. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video used in the false post (left) and the video uploaded to the TOI Plus Twitter account (right): Screenshot comparison of the video used in the false post (left) and the video uploaded to the TOI Plus Twitter account (right) Text on the video says one of the five men in the video had died. The incident was also reported by other Indian media here and here . According to a report by The Hindustan Times here , the man died on February 26, 2020 after he was released from police custody. The report, from January 2022, says a Delhi court had ordered the police to identify the officers involved after the victim's mother filed a petition with the court. (en)
