  • A video has been shared repeatedly in social media posts alongside a claim it shows Manila Mayor Francisco Domagoso admitting he squandered millions of government funds. The video -- which claims the revelation is breaking news -- has been shared in a misleading context. It actually contains no such confession by Domagoso. It shows a Filipino social media personality reacting to a corruption allegation against Domagoso in 2014. As of August 2021, there have been no credible reports that he confessed to the alleged crime. The video was posted on YouTube here on August 16, 2021. The video's thumbnail shows Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and former actor Domagoso, who is also known by his screen name Isko Moreno. Domagoso represents the Philippine opposition party Aksyon Demokratiko (Democratic Action). The video's caption translates as: BREAKING NEWS ISKO MORENO SUDDENLY ADMITS HE SQUANDERED 70 MILLION PESOS, THE PAID MEDIA DOES NOT WANT TO RELEASE THIS. The text overlay reads: WHERE IS THE 70M? A screenshot of the misleading post taken on August 24, 2021 The allegations against Domagoso surfaced after Manila returned to lockdown and thousands flocked to vaccination sites. The rush to get jabbed came after President Rodrigo Duterte said that people who do not want to be vaccinated should stay home. AFP reported on the developments here . The video was also shared on Facebook here and here , and on Reddit here . But the clip has been shared in a misleading context. A review of the video found it does not show Domagoso admitting to misappropriating millions of government funds. In fact, it shows Filipino social media personality Banat By reacting to an old Philippine Star article about a complaint against Domagoso and other officials in 2014. I am not saying this is true... I'm just saying there were people who weren't satisfied with his administration, the social media influencer says in the video. In 2014, village officials filed a complaint against Domagoso and several local officials for allegedly diverting millions of property taxes from other areas to a village in Manila, the Philippine Star reported. Domagoso -- who was the capital's vice mayor at the time -- previously denied the allegation in a 2014 video report by Philippine television channel GMA. As far as we're concerned, we have not violated any provision of law. The word 'plunder' is just trending nowadays, Domagoso said in the 2014 interview. In response to the misleading posts circulating in August 2021, Domagoso told AFP they were fake news. (en)
