  • A video has been viewed more than a hundred thousand times in Twitter posts that claim it shows Hong Kong's iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant sinking into the ocean. However, the video is in fact a computer-generated (CG) animation that simulates the sinking of the vessel. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant clearly did not experience high winds and waves. Such a large ship would not sink at this speed, there's a chance a hole was made and led to this, reads a Chinese-language tweet , posted on July 5, 2022. The 45-second video, which has been viewed more than 30,000 times, appears to show the floating restaurant sinking into the sea. Screenshot of the misleading post, taken on July 13, 2022 The posts circulated after the operator of Hong Kong's iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant had caused confusion by insisting the vessel had only capsized and not sunk in the South China Sea on June 19, 2022 as it was towed away from the city. The financially struggling tourist attraction, which closed down in March 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, was on its way to an undisclosed location to await new management when it encountered adverse conditions and began to take on water , its parent company said on June 20. The water depth at the scene is over 1,000 metres, making it extremely difficult to carry out salvage works, the company had also said at the time. The same video has garnered more than 110,000 views after it appeared with a similar claim on Twitter here and here . Some social media users appeared to believe the posts showed genuine footage of the restaurant sinking. One commented: It tilted one floor in 10 seconds, sinking faster than the Titanic! Others wrote: What was this shot with, drone? and The ship is sinking, and they even took video of it? Screenshot of Twitter users' comments However, the claim is false. A keyword image search on Google found a longer video published here on YouTube on June 22, 2022. The video's title, written partly in traditional Chinese, reads: Computer-generated simulation of the sinking of Jumbo Floating Restaurant, CG animation reconstructs the capsizing of the whole vessel. The English-language part of the title reads: Sinking Jumbo Floating Restaurant at sea. The video description states: The Jumbo Floating Restaurant sank 1,000 meters in the South China Sea's Paracel Islands. This video is a 3D simulation video. If you want to share, please indicate this channel, The Underground VFX, as the source. The thumbnail of the video also says it is an animation. In a comment, the owner of the YouTube channel said: This video was created before the ship's owner made the announcement. Everyone thought it was sinking at the time. I'll make a new one if I have time. Below is a screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading post (left) and the genuine YouTube video (right): Screenshot comparison of the video in the misleading post (left) and the genuine YouTube video (right) According to the YouTube channel's description, The Underground specialises in visual-effects videos. It says: A VFX and Motion Design behind the scenes showcase channel.
