A Facebook post claims that Tops , a liquor retailer that falls under the Southern African supermarket chain Spar , is hiring. It shows a photo of a fully stocked Tops store. The post says Tops is looking for alcohol packers to start immediately. Applicants must have a grade 8 qualification and be 18 years of age or older. It includes a link to a web page where people can supposedly apply online. But the link does not take you to the official Tops website . Instead, it goes to a page with a list of different available vacancies. These links in turn take you to yet another website called All Updates. None of the options provide a legitimate way to apply for a job at Tops. This setup is similar to a number of other Facebook pages Africa Check has investigated for posting false job ads. Spar doesn’t advertise jobs on Facebook Spar’s official South African website says that the company advertises jobs on South African online recruitment platform PNet . We have teamed up with PNet, one of South Africa’s largest online career portals, to advertise vacancies, it says . Val Pillay of Spar’s service bureau previously told Africa Check that vacancies at the head office are not advertised on Facebook. The ad does not specify a specific store or office, but is clearly a scam. – Africa Check
