  • Two photos have been shared repeatedly in posts that claim they show a major new bridge under construction in southwestern Bangladesh. Although local media reported the bridge's construction was reaching its final stages in mid-July, the images have been shared in a false context. The images -- which have been manipulated to insert Bangladeshi flags -- show a bridge that connects Russia to the annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. The two photos were shared on Facebook here on July 2, 2022. They are almost an exact mirror image of each other. The post's Bengali-language caption translates to English as: Kalna Bridge awaiting its inauguration. The six-lane Kalna Bridge over the Madhumati River is going to be launched very soon. More than 90 percent of the construction work has been completed. If the bridge is opened, the distance from Dhaka to Khulna will be reduced by 121 km (75 miles). The distance between Dhaka and Kolkata will be reduced by 200 km (124 miles). Screenshot of the misleading Facebook post, taken on July 17, 2022 The construction of the Kalna Bridge -- which will connect the southwestern districts of Narail and Gopalganj -- entered its final stages in mid-July, according to the English-language daily the Dhaka Tribune. The bridge is set to shorten travelling times through the southern part of Bangladesh when it opens to traffic in September 2022, the newspaper reported. The new link will be opened shortly after Bangladesh inaugurated a new bridge near its capital Dhaka in late June, ending an economic bottleneck that required freight destined for the poverty-stricken south and the Indian megacity of Kolkata to be slowly ferried over the Padma river. The images were also shared here and here on Facebook alongside a similar claim. However, the images show a bridge in Crimea. Crimean bridge A reverse image search on Google found the original photo shared in this tweet published on May 14, 2018 by Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Crimea. The longest in #Russia and #Europe 19 km #CrimeanBridge will be opened for cars on May 16. #Bridge #Crimea #Russia #СтройкаВека #КрымскийМост pic.twitter.com/zI1mqozQ3H — Russia's MFA in Crimea (@PMSimferopol) May 14, 2018 The tweet reads: The longest in #Russia and #Europe 19 km #CrimeanBridge will be opened for cars on May 16. The original photo does not include the two Bangladeshi flags. On May 15, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially opened the Crimean Bridge by driving a truck to the Crimean side. Costing 228 billion rubles (US$3.7 billion), the Crimean Bridge connected the southern Krasnodar region of Russia with the Crimean city of Kerch, spanning a strait between the Black and Azov seas. Below is a screenshot comparison of the image in the misleading Facebook post (left) and the original photo posted by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Crimea on Twitter (right): The same photo was also published here in a report about the Crimean Bridge's inauguration by the MailOnline, the website for UK-based tabloid the Daily Mail, on May 15, 2018.
