  • A message circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook claims Nigerian music star Davido is giving out free airtime and data to celebrate his uncle’s recent win in the Osun state governorship election. Senator Ademola Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, was declared the winner of the polls held in July 2022 . Hurry now and get yours, I just got my with 3 of my sims don't be stingy forward to other friends and groups. It gives a series of shortened Bitly links to a website where people can apply for the supposed giveaway. The singer, whose full name is David Adeleke, did celebrate Adeleke’s win. But is he really giving away airtime and data? Engagement bait scam The website requires users to provide their phone numbers to apply for the free airtime and data. It then instructs them to share the post with 12 WhatsApp groups. This is simply engagement bait, and typical of scams Africa Check has exposed before. In November 2021, the Nigerian Communications Commission warned Nigerians not to fall for scam giveaways such as this. The NCC wishes to advise our teeming telecom consumers to have nothing to do with the advert or any similar bogus enticements. The adverts are what they are – social engineering rip-offs designed to get people’s MSISDN and other information that fraudsters can use later to defraud unsuspecting telecom consumers and members of the public, the warning reads .
