  • Did Trump-Supporting Teens Trick Bernie Sanders into Posing with Them? Claim Teenaged supporters of United States President Donald Trump tricked Sen. Bernie Sanders into posing for a picture with them. Rating Decontextualized Like this fact check? Reporting In late September 2019 a number of Facebook posters shared a photograph of Sen. Bernie Sanders posing with two high school girls in Trump 2020 and Make America Great Again attire. Although some users shared it without a misleading caption, others implied the girls somehow tricked Sanders into posing with them. One such post said: Ha! These are a couple of Northwood, Iowa girls posing with Bernie in their Trump and MAGA T-shirts. Does his staff not vet them? Help me make this go viral! Another said they were sure Sanders didn’t even notice the girls’ shirts. Commenters appeared to take the claims at face value, remarking: Dude is soooooo oblivious!!!! Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die Too funny, the jokes on him. I sure he will come up with a good excuse. He couldn’t see the shirts!!! IT’S SIMPLE, HE IS A SIMPLETON. OMG.... That poor (RICH) man needs to be put in a HOME! Few commenters posited that Sanders was not only aware the girls wore Trump 2020 and Make America Great Again shirts, nor did many of them seem to consider Sanders would not object to posing for a photograph with them. On rudimentary inspection of the photograph alone, however, Sanders did not seem oblivious to the girls’ shirts. And neither did the girls appear to be behaving disrespectfully — it seemed as if both the Senator and the teenagers were pleased to appear in the image. According to KAAL-TV, Sen. Sanders visited Northwood-Kensett High School in Iowa on September 23 2019 to host an assembly. Sanders spoke to the students about the issues and the 2020 election: To the young people let me say this ... Our country faces many, many problems and the only way we solve those problems is when people become involved in the political process, Sanders said. Sanders spoke on health care, climate change and his plan for free college tuition. ... So that every young person in this room and this country can go to college or trade school regardless of the income of your family, said Sanders. A local outlet reported that other students wore Trump 2020 gear, but happily posed with Sanders when afforded the opportunity: Several students wore Trump 2020 gear, but still took selfies with Sanders afterward. Whatever political disagreements they might have had while going through the line ended, for a moment, when they met the candidate. Then it was all smiles. When images of Sen. Bernie Sanders posing with two (of several) students sporting Trump 2020 and Make America Great Again apparel at a visit to Northwood-Kensett High School in Iowa, those photographs were taken out of context and misrepresented. Sanders was, by all accounts, happy to pose for pictures with the students, and the students were similarly pleased to get a photograph with the American presidential candidate.
