  • A photo has been shared hundreds of times in social media posts that claim it shows students sleeping outside an examination centre in India's Uttar Pradesh after a major test for would-be teachers in the state was cancelled. The claim is false: the photo has circulated in news reports about an unemployment protest in Lucknow, the state's capital city. The photo -- which shows a group of people lying on the ground -- was shared on Facebook here on November 29, 2021. It has been shared more than 300 times. The post's Hindi-language caption translates to English as: Look at the picture below carefully. After studying, travelling many kilometres, spending the night at the train station in the cold, when you reach the test centre and you come to know the exam is cancelled, imagine how you would feel, #UPTET. UPTET refers to the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test, which would-be teachers in the state must pass in order to apply for teaching posts. Aspiring teachers were due to take the exam in test centres across the state on November 28 but it was postponed after a test paper was leaked, Press Trust India (PTI) reported . The photo began circulating online shortly afterwards. The image, however, has been shared in a false context. Unemployment protest A Google reverse image search followed by keyword searches found that the photo matched scenes from a video published in this report by Dainik Bhaskar -- a Hindi-language news outlet -- on November 28. 2021. The report states that people travelled from the neighbouring state of Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh's state capital of Lucknow in order to protest against unemployment in their home state. The demonstration was held outside the headquarters of the Indian National Congress party in Uttar Pradesh, according to the report. Rajasthan is currently headed by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot , who is affiliated with the Congress Party. Teacher examination On November 28, the Uttar Pradesh police force's fact-checking team shared the same photo in a tweet debunking the false posts. The Hindi-language tweet translates to English as: This viral photo is not of the candidates of the UPTET, but of young people from Rajasthan. The candidates of the UPTET exam were sent home on the basis of their admission cards by UPSTRC buses. The exam will be conducted again in a month's time at the state's expense. Please don't spread misleading news. UPSRTC refers to the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation which services public transport across the state. Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh state's chief minister, also tweeted about the incident on November 28.
