  • A viral image on Facebook claims that the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is planning to tax dowry payments to raise revenue. The image is a screenshot of an article on the website Kenya Updates . The article has also been shared on Facebook. It claims the KRA board made it clear that the talks and consultations are ongoing and that the sooner they arrived at the agreement, the earlier they'd make it formal. KRA stated that upon successful consultation, they'd periodically be publishing names of Kenyans paying dowry and start the process. A dowry is money or property that a wife (or her family) gives to her husband (or his family) when they get married. The story has drawn mixed reactions. One user commented : What next ... breathing tax or washroom tax ... this is nonsense ... KRA jipeni shugli [mind your business]. KRA calls out fake The KRA has dismissed the story, posting the screenshot on its verified Facebook and Twitter accounts with the word FAKE stamped on it. Hii story hata sisi tumeiskia tu, it added , in Kiswahili. This translates as: We’ve also heard this story just like the rest of you. – Dancan Bwire (en)
