  • A View of San Francisco ‘Yesterday’? Claim Image depicts a homeless camp in San Francisco on July 19 2019. Rating Decontextualized Like this fact check? Reporting On July 20 2019 the Facebook page The Modern Conservative shared the following image , purportedly showing San Francisco the day before: https://www.facebook.com/ModCn/photos/a.828112317337232/1355096337972158/?type=3&theater Commenters lamented the purported state of the city underneath the photograph: SF is going downhill on a slippery slippery slope. So sad. Just wonderful, thank you democrats Check out your city Nancy [Pelosi]. You helped create this. Beautiful! Congrats Nancy and liberal Dems! So sad this has happened to that once beautiful city Although many took the time to comment (frequently referencing Rep. Nancy Pelosi ), it didn’t seem many stopped to check whether the claim was legitimate. The image did appear to have been taken in California, but it was not taken in July 2019. It appeared in a February 2019 Medium post titled Advocates respond to massive Oakland Homeless camp shut down, and read in part: Residents of tents and other temporary shelters found themselves on the streets once again, after the City of Oakland evicted the homeless encampment formerly located at the corner of East 12th Street and 23rd Avenue over the course of two weeks starting Jan. 31 [2019.] Florida is where wokes go to die... Please enable JavaScript Florida is where wokes go to die The City planned to relocate the estimated 39 residents from this encampment to the Community Cabins, or Tuff Sheds, located at 1449 Miller Ave., said Joe DeVries, Oakland’s assistant to the city administrator and chief privacy officer. However, Needa Bee, an organizer in Oakland’s homeless advocacy group, The Village, said that the number of people at the location was actually at least 56 and as high as 70 at times and, consequently, there were not enough shelters for everyone displaced. On January 31 2019, the East Bay Times reported : Oakland Public Works crews started clearing the encampment at East 12th Street and 23rd Avenue around 8:30 a.m. [in January 2019], using bulldozers to tear down structures. Police had blocked off that portion of East 12th Street with caution tape. City officials counted 39 people living at the encampment, and have offered to house all of them at the city’s newest Tuff Shed transitional housing site at East 15th Street and Miller Avenue where the Miller Avenue Branch Library once stood. By [that day], 16 of the 39 had taken the city up on its offer. The encampment, known as The Village, had set up in October 2017 on the lot. City officials told the organizers that the encampment would have to clear out by late 2018 in order to make way for a retrofitting project on the 23rd Avenue bridge, which passes over the encampment. That $10 million project will start in February [2019]. As presented, the image was taken out of context. It was captured in January 2019 as part of the removal of a homeless encampment in Oakland and does not show everyday conditions throughout the Bay Area.
