  • A video has been viewed thousands of times in Twitter and YouTube posts purporting to show a car crash in the central Chinese city of Xuchang in June 2021 that allegedly killed six people. The claim is false: the video actually shows an accident in which one woman died in Xinxiang in June 2018. There are no credible reports of the purported car accident in Xuchang city in June 2021. The video was shared in this tweet posted on June 25, 2021. It has been viewed more than 4,000 times. The footage shows a battered car, while a man can be heard wailing in the background. Another person can be heard saying in Mandarin that the driver must have been drinking. Chinese text overlaid on the video reads: The son of a director in Xiang county, Xuchang city, Henan province scored 670 in the National College Entrance Examination this year, got drunk and drove after the celebration, then all 6 people in the car died. A painful lesson! For the sake of your family and others! Don't drive after drinking alcohol! Screenshot taken on June 29, 2021, of the misleading Twitter post Xuchang is a city in central China’s Henan province. The video surfaced online after more than 10 million people applied for China’s national college entrance examination starting on June 7, 2021, state-owned newspaper China Daily and Global Times reported. The same video was also shared here on Twitter alongside a similar claim. However, the claim is false. The video actually shows a 2018 incident in a different Chinese city in the same province. AFP found no credible reports of the purported car accident in Xuchang city in June 2021. A keyword search found the same video published in 2018, also with similar claims, here , here and here . A further keyword search found a June 30, 2018 statement published on the official Weibo account of police in Xiangyang city in Henan province. The Weibo post features a screenshot of the video and a similar claim, and states that the footage was filmed in Henan’s Xinxiang city rather than Xiangyang, and shows a traffic accident in which one person was killed on June 27, 2018. Xinxiang is a city also in Henan province, located more than 150 kilometres north of Xuchang. AFP found another June 27, 2018 statement published by police in Xinxiang on Weibo. At 23:59 on June 26, 2018, the driver Zhao (female) drove the YuG**230 white car along Jinsui Avenue in the downtown area of our city from west to east till the intersection of Xin'er Street, where it hit the roadside greenbelt, and then the monitoring pole at the southwest corner of the intersection, causing a road traffic accident in which the car was seriously damaged, the driver Zhao was injured, and Yuan (female) in the same car was killed immediately, it reads in simplified Chinese. Police also noted that Zhao failed a breathalyser test at the scene. Based on the description from Xinxiang police, AFP found the same street in Xinxiang on Baidu Maps here . Below is a screenshot comparison between the video shared in the misleading posts (L) and the Baidu Maps street imagery (R): Screenshot comparison between the video shared in the misleading posts (L) and the Baidu Maps street imagery (R) The accident was also reported in 2018 by Chinese state newspaper People’s daily here and Henan’s local publisher Dahe Daily here .
