  • An image showing a newly constructed road has been shared on Twitter in Kenya alongside a claim that it shows the Kenya-Uganda border bridge. This is false: the bridge in the picture is part of a transport corridor that connects Cameroon and Nigeria. The photo was published on Twitter on November 5, 2022, and has since been retweeted more than 300 times. This is the border bridge linking Uganda and Kenya, reads the tweet. Screenshot showing the false tweet, taken on January 12, 2023 The image shows an aerial view of a newly built two-way road passing through a lush forest, with two manned barriers erected at the beginning of the bridge span. People can be seen walking the length of the road. However, the image does not show a newly constructed border crossing between the two east African countries of Kenya and Uganda. Cameroon/Nigeria border A reverse image search traced the photo to the official Nigerian government Twitter account. According to the caption, it shows a section of the Bamenda-Enugu Corridor known as the Nigeria/Cameroon Multinational Highway. The Joint Border Bridge is one of the projects under the Transport Facilitation Programme for the Bamenda-Enugu Corridor otherwise known as the Nigeria/Cameroon Multinational Highway and Transport Facilitation Programme (NCMH&TFP). pic.twitter.com/38NCfrakiK — Government of Nigeria (@NigeriaGov) November 3, 2022 Bamenda is a city in northwestern Cameroon while Enugu state is in southeastern Nigeria. The bridge was officially commissioned by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Paul Biya on November 3, 2022. Grants from the European Union and investment from the African Development Bank helped fund the strategic 400-kilometre-long transport corridor from Bamenda to Enugu. The border bridge was the final phase of the project. According to local news reports in Nigeria, the corridor is expected to boost trade and strengthen cooperation between the two countries. Kenya/Uganda border While not on the same scale, Kenya and Uganda have taken steps to boost trade between the two countries. In 2018, the countries opened the Busia One Stop Border Post (OSBP) with the aim of making it easier and quicker for their respective traders to clear their goods.
