  • A video shared in multiple social media posts purportedly shows late football legend Diego Maradona pausing awkwardly when asked for his thoughts on the Chinese national football team. The posts circulated as football fans mocked the team, which was knocked out of a World Cup qualifier in February 2022. However, Maradona was actually asked about Mexican football in the Spanish-language interview from 2018, whose subtitles were mistranslated in the posts. The video was posted on February 2 on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, and has garnered more than 21,000 likes. Maradona once gave some pointers to the national football team, but unfortunately we didn't listen to him. I wish we had! #WorldCupQualifiers #NationalTeamvsVietnam , the simplified Chinese title reads. The video shows a pundit speaking to Maradona in Spanish, while the Chinese subtitles read: Mr Maradona, I know you've been to China before and have paid close attention to China's national football team, which is preparing for the 2022 World Cup. How can the team change the current situation? They are really looking forward to your feedback. Maradona then pauses blankly for several seconds, apparently struggling to find an answer. A screenshot, taken on Febaruary 22, 2022, of the misleading post Football icon Maradona, who lifted the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60. The clip was shared in similar posts on Facebook , TikTok and Douyin , where it attracted more than 175,000 likes in total. Chinese football fans mocked the national team after a 3-1 clobbering from Vietnam on February 1 dashed its slim hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. While some social media users appeared to take the video as a joke, others seemed to believe it genuinely showed Maradona being asked about the Chinese football team. After thinking about it for a long time, if I were him, I wouldn't have been able to answer this either. They are really putting this old man in an awkward spot, one person commented. Another read: Maradona is thinking about Chinese fans and wants to say something nice, but there is really nothing to say. However, the subtitles in the video have been mistranslated. A Google reverse image search found the same video posted on Twitter by ESPN FC, a US programme that covers international football, on November 26, 2018. The English subtitles read: Diego, being here (in Mexico) I guess that you have watched the MX league first division more regularly. You have observed it more closely. I guess you already knew a little bit about it. What do you think about the level of the MX league? The MX league refers to Liga BBVA MX , the top professional football division in Mexico. The clip was widely shared in the media, including here and here . The Daily Mail reported that Maradona had been getting to grips with Mexican football after taking over as the manager of Dorados de Sinaloa a few months earlier. (en)
